Create a subdomain

Reminder: What is a sub-domain?

A subdomain is an extension of your main domain name. It is determined by a DNS entry and usually an associated service or hosting.

For example:

  • portail.lrob.fr is a subdomain of lrob.fr.
  • www.lrob.fr is also a sub-domain, although it is often configured by default

Subdomains are unlimited on Web Hosting LRob as well as on Web Agency offers.

Create a subdomain via Plesk

This mini-guide explains how to create a subdomain containing a website via your Plesk panel, when your domain is fully managed by LRob (DNS included), and you have a Let's Encrypt Wildcard SSL certificate already active for this domain.

If you only need to create a DNS entry for an external service or site, then go instead to the page about DNS zones.

Step 1: Access domain management

  1. Log in to your Plesk control panel.
  2. In the main menu, click on "Websites & domains.

Step 2: Add a subdomain

  1. At the top of the page, click on "Add a subdomain".
  2. In the Subdomain name field, enter the desired name (e.g. blog, api, dev, boutique, etc.).
  3. Leave the default document root proposed by Plesk, unless you have a specific need.
  4. Click "OK" to confirm subdomain creation.

Step 3: Apply the Wildcard SSL certificate

Once the subdomain has been created, it is important to secure connections with HTTPS :

  1. In the list of domains, locate the section corresponding to the sub-domain you've just created.
  2. Click "Hosting and DNS", then "Hosting".
  3. Scroll down to the "Certificate" section.
  4. From the drop-down list, select the Wildcard certificate corresponding to your domain. It will appear as:
    lrob.fr (valid for *.lrob.fr)
  5. Click on "Save".

Your subdomain is now active and secure, so all you have to do is enjoy it.

Using the subdomain

You can use your subdomain immediately, for example for :
