Basically, the domain is \u00abpointed\u00bb to a destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you visit a domain like lrob.fr, your web browser makes a DNS resolution request in the background to find out the IP address of the server hosting the site.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When you send an e-mail, further requests are made to find the destination mail server and authenticate the sender.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does the DNS system work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1 - Registrar \ud83c\udfe2<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Domain names like lrob.fr are registered with a \u00abregistrar\u00bb such as HaiSoft, Gandi, NameCheap, OVH, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each registrar must go through a \u00abregistry\u00bb that is the authority for domain name extensions. For example :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>.en<\/strong> AFNIC<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>.com<\/strong> \/ <strong>.net<\/strong> Verisign<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>.org<\/strong> Public Interest Registry (PIR)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2 - NS (Name Servers) \ud83c\udf0d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To make a domain \u00abresolvable\u00bb (accessible), it must have \u00abname servers\u00bb or NS (Name Servers).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NSs contain the domain's pointing information and are said to be \u00abauthoritative\u00bb. Always define at least two NS for redundancy. The registrar sends this information to the registry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2139\ufe0f The domain owner (\u00abregistrant\u00bb) is free to use the NS of his choice, or even to create his own, using values called Glue Records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Various providers exist and you can create your own directly with a little knowledge. This is the case, for example, with lrob.net, my infrastructure domain with a complete autonomous DNS system supplied to all hosted customers to centralize their DNS management independently of the registrar used. How convenient!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lrob.fr\/en\/doc\/dns\/ns-name-servers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">More about Name Servers<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3 - DNS zone \ud83c\udf10<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u26a0\ufe0f This is what you absolutely must master!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NS are servers containing the domain's DNS zone. It is this DNS zone that contains the actual pointing values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the IP of the server hosting the site<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>IP or host name of mail server<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meta-information such as the list of servers authorized to send mail for a domain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Discover <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lrob.fr\/en\/doc\/dns\/dns-zone\/\">all possible DNS values and how to manage your DNS zone <\/a>via LRob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do we do with all this?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You're now free to register a domain name with any registrar, to manage your NS (and therefore your DNS zone) wherever you like.
